It’s 11 p.m. and water is spreading across the kitchen floor, or a toilet won’t stop running, or a drain is a little slower than usual. Two of those need a call right now. One can wait until morning. Knowing the difference saves you money and, in a real emergency, protects your home.
Call right away if…
- Water won’t stop. A burst pipe or failed fixture releasing water you can’t shut off spreads damage by the minute.
- Sewage is backing up. Waste coming up through a drain or toilet is a health hazard and usually points to a main-line blockage.
- You’ve lost water entirely. A sudden, whole-home loss of water can mean a break in the supply line.
- A water heater is leaking heavily. A slow drip can wait; a steady leak can’t.
- You smell gas. Leave the house immediately, don’t touch switches, and call your gas utility or 911 before anyone else. Only call a plumber once it’s confirmed safe.
It can usually wait for a scheduled visit if…
- A single drain is running slow but not backing up.
- A faucet has a minor, steady drip.
- A toilet runs occasionally but you can still flush it.
- Water pressure has dropped slightly but water still flows normally.
What to do while you wait
Whether it’s an emergency or not, the first move is usually the same: find your main water shutoff valve. If you don’t already know where it is, this is worth figuring out today, before you’re standing in an inch of water trying to find it. Closing it stops the flow at the source while help is on the way.
If you’re dealing with a real emergency, a few quick photos for insurance and moving valuables away from the water are worth the extra minute — but only after the water is shut off.
When in doubt, call
You don’t have to self-diagnose alone. Describe what you’re seeing and a plumber can help you figure out whether it’s urgent, and what to do in the meantime. That’s a better outcome than either panicking over a minor drip or letting a real emergency sit overnight.
