WHEN IT’S NEEDED

When to schedule backflow testing

Backflow testing usually comes up around a few common situations.

Your annual test is due
Most devices are required to be tested once a year — worth scheduling ahead of the deadline.
You installed a new irrigation system
New sprinkler systems typically need a backflow device tested before use.
You received a notice from the utility
Many water utilities send a reminder when your test is coming due.
A device looks like it’s leaking
A visibly leaking or corroded device should be checked before it fails a required test.
A property is changing hands
Buying or selling often calls for current backflow documentation on file.
WHY IT MATTERS

What backflow prevention actually protects

Backflow devices exist for a specific reason — keeping the clean water supply clean.

Preventing cross-connections

Irrigation, boilers, and some equipment connect to the water supply — a device stops water from flowing backward into it.

Blocking contamination

Without it, fertilizer, chemicals, or non-potable water could siphon back into drinking water.

Meeting code & insurance requirements

Many properties are required to test annually to stay compliant with local code.

Aging devices fail quietly

Internal parts wear out, which is exactly why annual testing catches problems before they matter.

WHAT IS BACKFLOW?

Water is supposed to flow one direction

“Backflow” is when water reverses direction in the plumbing system — caused by a drop in supply pressure or a difference in pressure between systems. If a hose, sprinkler line, or piece of equipment is connected to the clean water supply, that reversal can pull contaminants back into it.

A backflow prevention device is a one-way check that stops that reversal from happening. Testing confirms it’s actually doing its job.

COMMON DEVICE TYPES
Reduced pressure zone (RPZ)
Double check valve assembly
Pressure vacuum breaker (PVB)

DON’T WAIT

What skipping a test can cost you

Backflow testing is easy to forget until it becomes a problem you can’t ignore.

Contamination risk

A failed device leaves the clean water supply exposed to backflow contamination.

Compliance issues

Skipping a required test can create problems with your water utility or local code.

Insurance complications

Missing documentation can complicate claims or renewals for some properties.

Certified testers

Backflow testing needs to be done by a certified tester and reported correctly. We handle both the test and the paperwork that follows it.

Commercial & irrigation focus

Restaurants, offices, and properties with irrigation systems are common candidates for required testing — we work with all of them.

TWO COMMON TYPES

RPZ vs. double check valve

Which device your property needs usually comes down to the level of hazard involved.

RPZ ASSEMBLY

For higher-hazard connections

Provides stronger protection, often required where a serious contamination risk exists.

DOUBLE CHECK VALVE

For lower-hazard connections

A common choice for irrigation systems and situations with less serious risk.

WHO NEEDS TESTING

Properties that typically need testing

If your property has one of these, a backflow device is likely required and due for annual testing.

A lawn irrigation system
Commercial & multi-unit properties
Fire sprinkler systems
Boilers & certain heating systems
Restaurants & commercial kitchens
Properties on a private well

STAY AHEAD

Keep your testing on track

A little organization keeps backflow compliance from becoming a scramble.

1
Test annually, on schedule
Scheduling ahead of your deadline avoids a last-minute rush or a lapse in compliance.
2
Protect devices from freezing
Outdoor devices need protection or draining ahead of winter to avoid freeze damage.
3
Watch for visible leaks
Dripping or corrosion at the device is worth having checked before the next test.
4
Keep documentation on file
Having past test records handy helps with utility requests or a property sale.
5
Ask us to track multiple devices
For several properties or devices, we can help you keep every deadline organized.
